Regular Season Basketball: BASIC GAME example of play

To give you a good idea of how the game works let’s try to replay a 2010-2011 regular season game between the Mavericks and the Heat. The basic rules will be used, just to keep things easier.

For the initial setup you do not need to fill every scoresheet cell with the player names, because as you will learn, it is the game engine telling you who is involved and when is involved. Instead, you have to do only a couple of calculations to determine the MODIFIERS in terms of points, for both teams:

Let’s suppose we are at The AA Arena of Miami, so that the Heat are playing at home.

  • Miami has an Home Offense Rate of -9, this must be added to the Dallas Road Defense Rate (-3) to obtain a total MOD of -12.
  • Dallas has a Road Offense Rate of -13, this must be added to the Miami Home Defense Rate (-6) to obtain a total MOD of -19.

So it is quite a difficult game for the Mavs here on the road with a seven points gap to fill.

To share these points among the 16 segments of the game, I try to put the difference in the final stages of the game just to recreate the home court advantage in the clutch part of the game. Here below is the distribution:

GAME TIME   DALLAS     MIAMI
               3        0        0
               6        0

       0

               9      - 2      - 2
         1st Q      - 2      - 2
               3        0        0
               6        0        0
               9      - 2      - 2
           Half      - 2      - 2
               3        0        0
               6      - 1        0
               9      - 2      - 2
        3rd Q      - 2      - 2
               3        0        0
               6      - 2        0
               9      - 2        0
          Final      - 2        0

         Total     - 19     - 12

So, six of the seven points gap will be in the final quarter. As per the rules, no more than two points can be assigned to each segment (leaving just 1 point when the total is odd) and no compensation is also possible assigning -2 to a segment and a +2 to another just to have a total effect of zero.

1st quarter (minute 3.00)

DALLAS roll 6+5

MIAMI roll 3+3

The score is 11-6 Mavericks after three minutes. But the first dice roll has a double meaning: it also indicates which player is not playing. Consulting the Dallas Rest Chart we find that with a sum of 11: D. Stevenson, P. Stojakovic and B. Cardinal are out. Write these three names in the shaded area of the scoresheet under the totals. For Miami the Rest Chart with a sum of 6 indicates that E. House, J. Howard and H. Haslem are out for the game. Also write these names in the Miami shaded area. You will keep the stats for these six players normally and you will reassign those stats at the end of each quarter to the players in game.

Dallas stats: Check Team Chart Row 6-5

The Mavs start in a strong way, they put a 5 / 8 from the field on the scoreboard:

Haywood 2/3

Marion 2/2

Kidd 1/3 (from the arc of 3pt)

Moreover Kidd has three assist and another one came from Beaubois for a total of 4 assists.

Marion grabbed 2 defensive rebounds.

So 4 points for Marion, 4 points for Haywood and three for Kidd.

Miami stats: Check Team Chart Row 3-3

Ilgauskas has 1/2

Wade has 1/2

James 2/2 from the FT line

Dampier has 1 offensive rebound, Jones 1 defensive rebound and Bosh served one assist.

1st quarter (minute 6.00)

DALLAS roll 4+1

MIAMI roll 3+2

Score 16-11 Mavericks.

Dallas stats: Check Team Chart Row 4-1

Barea 1/2

Haywood 1/1 (and is 3/4 so far)

Barea 1/1 FT (meaning that he converted a three point play in combination with 1/2 FG)

Stevenson 0/3 3PT (but he’s not playing, so this stat is written in the shaded area and it will be reassigned at the end of the quarter)

Chandler took 1 offensive rebound, Stojakovic has 2 defensive boards (but he’s also out so write 2 rebs in the shaded area to remember the reassignment needed) and Kidd served his 4th assist of the game.

Four assists in six minutes... This is a nice start for the 38 years old Jason...

Miami stats: Check Team Chart Row 3-2

M. Miller 1/2

J. Jones 1/1

M. Miller 1/1 from the FT line (another three point play)

James 0/1 Three pointers. He misses from downtown... he has just 2 points so far neither from the field.

Miller has an offensive rebound also and Haslem 2 on defense (but he’s not playing).

Lebron just succeeds in serving his first assist of the game.

1st quarter (minute 9.00)

DALLAS roll 2+2 (MOD -2) = 2 points scored

MIAMI roll 5+2 (MOD -2) = 5 points scored

Score 18-16 Mavericks.

Dallas stats: Check Team Chart Row 2-2

Nowitzki misses two shots 0/2

Barea has 1/1 but since the modifier is in effect, he also misses 0/1 (he’s 1/3 so far)

Butler has 2/2 FT (the only points of this three minutes)

Butler has also an offensive rebound (probably grabbed before being fouled in act of shooting)

Terry find the scoresheet with 1 defensive board. But mark two for him because of the opponents -2 MOD.

No assist served.

It seems the Heat raised their defensive effort in this span...

Miami stats: Check Team Chart Row 5-2

Lebron with 1/3 (4 points for James so far)

Dampier 1/1 but the modifier is in effect, so he misses 0/1

Dampier 0/1 FT

House 1/1 three pointers (but he’s not playing, so shaded area... and reassignment later)

Anthony 1 offensive rebound

Bibby 1 defensive rebound. Since Dallas has -2 MOD add a rebound for Bibby (2)

Chalmers 1 assist

End of 1st Quarter

DALLAS roll 2+6 (MOD -2) = 6 points scored

MIAMI roll 1+1 (MOD -2) = 0 points scored

Score 24-16 Mavericks.

Dallas stats: Check Team Chart Row 2-6

Terry scores three points 1/2 from the field and 1/1 from the line

Nowitzki misses again because of the modifier in effect 0/1 (0/3 total)

Butler scores an heavy bomb 1/1 and he has 5 points so far.

Nowitzki take two defensive rebounds (plus one because of the -2 Miami MOD = 3) and serves 1 assist.

Jason Kidd reaches a total of 5 in the assist area with one.

Miami stats: Check Team Chart Row 1-1

Bosh has 1/2, but since the modifier is in effect he has just two shots missed 0/2

Jones also misses from the arc of 3pt 0/1

Jones has one defensive rebound (becoming two because of Dallas -2 MOD).

But no points scored in three minutes of play.

The game seems now a real though one for both teams with strong defense and slow paced action.

STATS AND REASSIGNMENTS

If you followed the example step by step compiling your scoresheet, you should have the players in the following order:

DALLAS:

HAYWOOD

MARION

KIDD

BEAUBOIS

BAREA

CHANDLER

NOWITZKI

BUTLER

TERRY

MAHINMI (No stats yet, but he’s playing because was not named in the rest chart)

MIAMI:

ILGAUSKAS

WADE

JAMES

DAMPIER

JONES

BOSH

MILLER

ANTHONY

BIBBY

CHALMERS

For Dallas there is a 0-3 3PT (from Stevenson) and 2 defensive rebounds (from Stojakovic) to reassign. Starting from the top of the order we find Haywood but he cannot receive as reassignment any three pointer (scored or attempted). You know it because of the “N” in the Roster Chart under 3PT. So Marion, Kidd and Beaubois will receive 0-1 3PT each. The two defensive rebounds are one for Haywood and one for Marion (first two of the order). For Miami there is a 1-1 3PT (from House) and two defensive rebounds (Haslem). The three pointer cannot go to Ilgauskas (because of the “N” in the Roster Chart) so it will be reassigned to the following player (Wade). The two defensive rebounds are one for Ilgauskas and one for Wade.
