BIG EAST CONFERENCE 1984-'85: 9 TEAMS
Eight-seed Villanova, coached by Rollie Massimino, won the national title with a 66–64 victory in the final game over Georgetown of Pat Ewing, coached by John Thompson. Ed Pinckney of Villanova was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. The game is often cited among the greatest upsets in college basketball history. This Villanova team remains the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament. The game is also notable as the last played without a shot clock.
This year's Final Four saw an unprecedented and unmatched three teams from the Big East Conference, with Villanova and Georgetown joined also by St. John's. The only "interloper" in the Big East party was Memphis State, then of the Metro Conference.
The 1985 Big East Conference Tournament took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It was a single-elimination tournament with four rounds. St. John's had the best regular season conference record and received the #1 seed. Georgetown defeated St. John's in the championship game 92–80, to claim its second straight Big East Tournament championship, and fourth overall.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SWEET SIXTEEN 2014-'15: 16 TEAMS
The 2015 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament began on March 17, 2015, and concluded with the championship game on April 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Duke defeated Wisconsin in the championship game, 68-63. Tyus Jones of Duke was the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Defending national champion Connecticut did not qualify. Kansas extended its streak of consecutive tournament appearances to 26 in a row. They have made each NCAA Tournament dating back to 1990.
For the first time since 1995, two 14 seeds recorded wins in the Second Round. On March 19, Georgia State defeated Baylor and UAB defeated Iowa State.
Of the sixteen games played on March 19, five were decided by one point, a single-day record.
For the first time since 2007 and the fourth time since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, all four 5 seeds won their Second Round games. This was also the first time since 2007 that there were four 4 vs. 5 matchups in the Third Round.
Michigan State reached its seventh Final Four in the last 18 seasons—the best mark in the nation during that time span.
For the first time since 2008, two 1 seeds reached the Championship, between Kansas and Memphis.
For the first time since 2009, multiple 1 seeds reached the Final Four.
Wisconsin was in its first final since 1941, and lost; and Duke in its first final since 2010, and won. The Wisconsin loss extended the Big Ten Conference's losing streak in National Championship games to six.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SWEET SIXTEEN 2011-'12: 16 TEAMS
The 2012 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament began on March 13, 2012, and concluded with Kentucky winning the championship game on April 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. For the first time in NCAA Tournament history, two #2 seeds (Duke and Missouri) were knocked out by #15 seeds (Lehigh and Norfolk State) in the Round of 64. Also for the first time, three teams seeded 13 and lower moved on from the Round of 64 in one day.
Two teams made their first NCAA tournament appearances in school history: MEAC champion Norfolk State and Summit League champion South Dakota State
All four teams from the state of Ohio (Cincinnati, Ohio, Ohio State, and Xavier) made it to the Sweet 16, marking the first time in tournament history any state has been represented by four teams in the round of 16. This tournament was also the first tournament since 1985 to feature no teams in the Sweet 16 from the Mountain or Pacific Time Zones.
It is also the first tournament ever that both national semifinals and the national championship game were regular season rematches.
Kentucky won the championship over Kansas by the score of 67–59, earning their 8th NCAA title and coach John Calipari's first.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SWEET SIXTEEN 2010-'11: 16 TEAMS
The 2010-'11 NCAA tournament was notable for its large number of upsets. In the Southwest region, Florida State (a 10 seed), Virginia Commonwealth (11) and Richmond (12) made the regional semifinals. This marked the first time in the history of the tournament that a region was represented by three double-digit seeds in the Sweet Sixteen. The tournament featured the first Final Four to not have one of the top two seeds from any of the four regions. VCU tied 11th-seeded LSU in 1986 and George Mason in 2006 as the lowest seeds ever to reach the Final Four. The semifinal game between VCU and Butler, an 8 seed, had the greatest seed number total of any Final Four matchup in history (19, surpassing the previous mark of 14 set in 1980 and matched in 2006). The Final Four as a whole similarly had the greatest seed number total ever (26, surpassing the previous mark of 22 set in 2000). Butler, making its second straight appearance in the final, tied 8th-seeded UCLA in 1980 and Villanova in 1985 as the lowest seeds ever to reach the championship game. Also, it should be noted that the city of Richmond, VA came into the national spotlight when its two teams Virginia Commonwealth and University of Richmond made it into the Sweet 16, a feat last achieved by Los Angeles in 2007.
This tournament was also notable for the struggle of the Big East, which had a record eleven (11) teams qualify for the tournament. Due to having more than eight teams in the tournament, it was possible for intra-Big East matchups to occur in the 3rd round. The Big East had only two (2) of the eleven (11) teams make it to the Sweet 16, and only because there were two intra-Big East matchups in the 3rd round. It should be noted that the eventual national champion was a Big East Team (UConn).

BIG TEN 2010-'11: 11 TEAMS
The 2010–'11 Big Ten Conference season marks the continuation of the annual tradition of competitive basketball among Big Ten Conference members that began in 1904. The Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis has host the 2011 Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament won by Ohio State over Penn State 71-60.
The Big Ten had seven teams invited to the 68-team 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament (NCAA Tournament) and one team invited to the 2011 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Ohio State was a number one seed and along with Wisconsin survived until the Sweet Sixteen round. No Big Ten teams made the elite eight and the Big Ten finished with a 7–7 record in the tournament. Northwestern made the elite eight round of the 32-team NIT before being eliminated.
JaJuan Johnson was the regular season MVP and Jared Sullinger was the 2011 Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament MVP. Both earned first team recognition as 2011 NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans and Sullinger earned numerous National Freshman of the Year Awards. The conference led the nation in attendance for the 35th straight season with a 12,826 overall average and 7 of the top 25 schools

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE (ACC) 2009-'10: 12 teams
Duke claimed its fourth NCAA National Championship, defeating Butler 61-59, before 70,930 in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium. The Blue Devils have won NCAA titles in three consecutive decades in 1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010. Duke’s Kyle Singler averaged 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds en route to being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Duke also captured its ninth ACC title in 12 years and a league-best 18th overall, defeating seventh-seeded Georgia Tech 65-61 for the ACC championship in Greensboro. The Yellow Jackets were playing in the championship game for the first time since 2005 and seventh timeoverall. Six ACC teams - Duke, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Wake Forest - landed spots in the NCAA Tournament. Three league teams - North Carolina, NCState and Virginia Tech - earned NIT bids, with the Tar Heels advancing to the championship game before losing to Dayton. Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez and Gary Williams, were named ACC Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, while Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors earned league Rookie of the Year honors. With a 9-5 record, the ACC extended its non-losing streakin NCAA Tournament play to a national-best 22 straight years. For the second time in four years, 10 ACC teams finished the season with 20 or more wins.
